I couldn't understand some parts of this article 18-1, but I guess I just need to check some more resources regarding this, because it sounds interesting.

the last line of this piece is true. the pats may not be the most complete but they are the most spectacular failure in the nfl, maybe in sports. in the next 6 months, years, and decades, the 07 pats will be remembered not for going 18-0 but 18-1. the same way that our unbelievable 22 game winning streak is now a footnote in the patriots legacy, that fans and writers are now saying utter garbage under their breath like "pats have never won a convincing superbowl", and "pats are the new yankees", and that what the patriots have accomplished in this decade is so tarnished by haters, the 2007 season will forever be associated with great failure. no ring=failure. no ring for a team with 18 wins? "the greatest failure in football history".

I've caught some heat because of the way I ended this piece. Let me clarify. In my opinion this team was the greatest to ever play the game. Just how excellent they were was a matter for football historians to deliberate. I'm no historian, but I watched the 2007 Patriots do something no professional football team had ever done: play a 16-game regular season and advance to the Super Bowl undefeated. To me, that made them the greatest of all time. One loss can't erase the eighteen wins that came before it. This is still one of the storied teams to toss the pigskin. But because that one loss came with a title on the line, this team, this season, this quest, instantly became a failure. The Patriots had one goal superior to all the others and that was to win the Super Bowl, and they lost. You won't find one guy in the locker room or on the coaching staff who would say that 18-1 was a success. In fact, I'd bet they would all freely admit that 2007 was a failed season. So given that no team in the Super Bowl era had entered the final contest without a defeat (and LOST), the '07 Patriots are the greatest team to ever lay claim to a failed season. Anyone have a greater failure than that?
